Effect of Mediterranean Diet on Various Diseases

Mediterranean diets have an effect on various diseases. Their effects are as follows:

Hypertension
A direct relationship between dietary fat intake and hypertension has not been proved but evidence indicates that the balance offered by the Mediterranean diet (low SFAs, high MUFAs, carbohydrate, fiber, vitamin and mineral content) has a favorable effect on blood pressure.

Diabetes
The Mediterranean diet contains a lot of vegetables and cereals, and meets the demands of an adequate diabetic diet. Carbohydrates are usually taken as fiber-rich foods and fats as MUFAs not SFAs; the total fat content being variable depending on individual needs for weight loss.

Obesity
The fiber-rich carbohydrates of the Mediterranean diet help protect against and reduce obesity. The reduction in animal fats also offers the opportunity for achieving a more sensible balance of energy intake.

Thrombosis
A low-fat diet or a vegetable fat diet is preferable to a high SFA diet for protection against thrombosis, therefore the Mediterranean diet is recommended for the prevention of thrombosis.

Lipid levels
There is a direct correlation between plasma cholesterol levels and CHD. Lowering cholesterol levels reduces the risk of heart attacks. A 1 per cent reduction in cholesterol produces a 2-3 per cent reduction in CHD risk.

There are two types of cholesterol - LDL and HDL. High levels of the latter reduce the CHD risk, while high levels of LDL cholesterol increase the risk. High levels of triglyceride fats, especially with high levels of LDL and low levels of HDL also increase the risk of CHD.

Three saturated fatty acids (SFA) - lauric, myristic and palmitic acids - comprise 60-70 per cent of all SFA. Replacing SFA in the diet with monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) or polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) helps to maintain a good energy balance.

The primary dietary PUFA is linoleic acid contained in vegetable oils, such as sunflower oil. This markedly lowers cholesterol when substituted for SFA. Alpha-linoleic acid (in soybean and rapeseed oils), and eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (in oily fish such as herring and mackerel) lower triglyceride levels with little effect on cholesterol levels.

The major dietary MUFA is oleic acid, the predominant fat in olive oil. MUFAs and PUFAs both significantly reduce LDL when substituted for SFA. A high MUFA intake does not significantly alter HDL levels. LDL cholesterol in people on high MUFA diets is more resistant to oxidation, a process which causes free radical production detrimental to cells.

Dieting and Weight Loss - A New Programme For Achieving Your New Year Resolution

A world of food abundance; that's the reality we live in on this part of our planet. So after all the over indulgences of the festive season, the New Years resolution for most of us is yet again to lose weight. How many years has this been your resolution? Now be honest with yourself, how long does the resolution last?

How would you like the ability to sustain your motivation all year and find the weight you were born to be? Believe it or not you have that ability right now. The problem is you have probably been looking in the wrong direction and with the wrong mindset. Sustainable motivation is fed by positive thoughts, feelings and actions and not by shame, guilt and self-loathing.

So here we are at the start of 2008 with a great opportunity to change the way you think and live. Change first comes from recognising the starting point from which you want to make the changes. To do this I invite you to answer the following question...

"If you were going to build a machine that produced comfort eating and weight gain, what would the machine need to do?"

Interesting question? I sat down some time ago and made a list of what my machine would be programmed to do. Yours may well be quite different so have a go at this yourself. I decided that my machine would need to be programmed to...

Focus obsessively on food;

Make some food 'Good' and others 'Bad';

Fear the 'Bad' food, restrict its intake and then crave it;

Believe that its present size, shape and weight is never 'Good Enough';

Pick up all the negative messages (viruses) that come into contact with it;

Have an already full memory of 'viruses' of negative messages and beliefs;

Be rebellious sometimes and give out lots of messages as to why the 'Bad' food is deserved;

Quickly bring the emotions of guilt, shame and self-loathing into play when not in rebellious

mode;

Hate its body no matter what size or shape it is;

See exercise or increased physical activity as a painful or boring process;

Make sure its mind is never in tune with its bodily feelings and needs;

Make sure that happiness is a fleeting experience;

Make sure that a 'not enough time' programme deletes thoughts of self-loving actions.

Can you see the pattern of negativity? I realised that nothing programmed in this way can ever sustain motivation for permanent weight loss. The programme needed to be changed. The wonderful thing is that we CAN reprogramme our minds. After all, we ourselves programmed it to comply with the dieting game so we can certainly change the programme again.

Why not make your 2008 New Years resolution to be one of reprogramming, support and self-loving actions. The amazing thing is the results will be the permanent weight loss you have wanted year after year. Isn't it time to make this year the one where you discover the weight you were born to be?

Fad Weight Loss Diets Don't Work

People are always looking for a miracle diet that will magically cause the weight to disappear. However, they just don't work. From the vinegar diet to the maple syrup diet, the fad weight loss diet has existed for a long time. The first low carbohydrate diet appeared in 1825, way ahead of Dr. Atkin's time. Lord Byron popularized the vinegar and water diet in 1820.

Why is it that we always fall for these fad weight loss diets? Part of the reason, we want to lose weight, we want to lose it now, and we're in a hurry to get there. We are looking for the shortcuts. Not only does it take discipline to eat right and exercise, but a lot of people find it boring and they grow impatient waiting for the results.

The problem with fad diets, is after a while, you just get sick of eating only one thing. You start craving variety or you want that sweet snack, and you've been deprived for so long, you just eat the whole bag of candy bars. A good weight loss diet plan should change a person's eating and exercise habits for life, not just for a short time.

Not all fad diets sound ridiculous, in fact some of them actually sound very scientific. Unfortunately, the main reason a person loses weight on this diet is because of severe calorie cutting that occurs when a food group is practically eliminated. In fact, all fad weight loss diets have at least one thing in common. They have some sort of gimmick that cuts calories, usually to the extreme.

Another thing that fad diets have that a real weight loss diet doesn't have is the "It sounds too good to be true" factor. Any diet promising overnight results is just too unrealistic. It takes time and effort to truly lose weight and keep it off. Therefore, if you hear of a diet that just sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't true.

Because a fad diet tends to eliminate whole food groups, the dieter is denied important nutrients. As a result, your health can suffer, you could become vitamin deficient, and it has even led to death in extreme cases.

In today's society, it is important to be thin, in fact your success in life sometimes may even depend on it. Therefore, it is tempting to look for the quick fix. But just remember the old saying, if it looks too good to be true is especially true for fad diets. Even though it takes time and effort to achieve long term weight loss, this will work better for you than a fad diet.

Fad weight loss diets don't work for most people. At http://www.healthyweightlossreview.com/ you can find information that can help you lose weight in a healthy way without having to chance damage to your health with a fad weight loss diet.

Are High Protein Weight Loss Diets Safe?

High protein diets have become a popular way to lose weight, in recent years. Many of these diets promote the idea that carbohydrates should be limited, while high-protein foods such as beef, chicken, pork and fish are the main feature on the menu.

Dieters can lose weight successfully on high protein diets, but should be aware that there may be health risks associated with this type of diet.

The American Heart Association does not recommend a high-protein diet for weight loss. The AHA web site states that most diets of this type lack a balance of needed essential nutrients and, if followed for a long time, they can result in potential health problems.

Limiting higher carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, cereals, grains and low-fat dairy products usually mean eating more meats, eggs and cheese, which contain a higher percent of saturated fats. Thus, a high-protein diet can:

*prevent the body from completely burning fat
*raise cholesterol levels
*raise blood pressure
*put you at risk of vitamin deficiencies
*cause loss of muscle tissue
*damage your kidneys and liver
*make you constipated, leading to more severe bowel problems
*increase the risk of kidney stones and osteoporosis

Furthermore, the AHA specifies that eating large amounts of high-fat foods for a sustained period raises the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and several types of cancer.

An article by Barbara Loecher (Protect Yourself From Environmental Toxins in Your Household, Prevention.com), warns that fish (including tuna), meat, poultry, and full-fat dairy products may contain man-made chemical contaminants called dioxins and polychlorinated biphenylswhich have been linked to cancer, hormone disruptions, and developmental delays in children who have been exposed before birth.

Another huge problem exists with diets requiring you to eat a greater quantity of meat. The fat-inducing hormones and antibiotics given, in great quantities, to cattle are passed right along to us, as we ingest juicy hamburgers, sizzling steaks, brats, etc., (and the BBQ grill adds its own flavorful toxins).

Our body knows how to respond to toxins, and effectively neutralizes themto an extent. However, our body was not created to live in a world filled with as many contaminants as we face daily. When our bodies become overwhelmed by these toxins, it simply produces more fat cells to hide the toxins in; we become fatter and have more difficulty losing weight.

There are ways to limit your intake of these toxins, such as choosing low-fat or fat-free dairy products, buying leaner cuts of meat, trimming off the fat and skin before cooking, and deciding that beans and lentils may be a healthier choice of protein. You could even become a vegetarian, and grow your own organic foods. But it is unrealistic to think you can live in a toxin-free environment, eat chemical-free food, and breathe toxin-free air.

My point is this before embarking or continuing on a high-protein diet, do some research, for your healths sake.

There is a healthy alternative to high-protein diets. A growing number of overweight men and women are turning to Nutritional Cleansing to achieve quick, but totally healthy and natural, weight loss. You cannot escape from toxins, in our world. But you can help your body battle the hazards of toxins.

Internal cleansing may give your body a fighting chance against fat-causing, disease-inducing toxins, so that you can lose weight and live a healthier life.

Getting High From Exercise, Naturally

Why is it that so many of us are always tired, lethargic and really don't have any energy at the end of our day of work. The last thing we want to do is head down to the gym, or pull on our jogging sweats and do a workout!

It seems a complete contradiction when you hear about people doing a workout GIVES them more energy, when all you are actually doing is burning lots of calories (ie. ENERGY!!!)

Having once been a desk jockey, spending 8+ hours a day sat in front of a screen, it is as if that computer monitor, telephone and my boss was sucking all that precious energy out of me.

I was not alone!

You could see it in the faces of the men and women working around me, by the time 6 O'clock came by they would wearily pull on their coats and jackets, trudge down to the car park and set off home ready for the sofa and TV remote.

The problem with this energy drain is we would always be looking for the quick "pick-me-up". Normally this comes in the form of snack machine fare, soda drinks packed with sugar, the post work alcoholic drinks and a visit to the curry house or fast food outlet on your journey home.

Coupled with your levels of inactivity this causes the inevitable weight gain, lowering of self esteem, energy and enthusiasm, in a horrible vicious circle...

Thankfully there is a solution, but it does require your first step, luckily we do have a naturally occurring chemical on our side to help us on the way once we do get going, beta-endorphin.

This chemical gives us a natural high after doing a workout, that kind of feel good glow. What's more it is possible to become addicted to this feeling, making the decision to pack a bag for the gym easier and easier!

It is important to understand under what conditions you need to invoke a flood of beta-endorphin, there is an easy way and a hard way...

It may seem strange to learn that the hardest way to get the rush is the most common method of workout that is adopted. When you jump on to your favorite cardio machine in the gym, or pull on your trainers for a jog it can take in excess of 50 minutes, according to clinical studies, in the "fat-burning zone" to get a decent kick of endorphin. The problem is it takes an awful lot of motivation to stick out a long and slow workout for a bit of a high.

Now I suppose you don't really want to know about the hard way!!

The easy way comes in the form of short-sharp bursts of physical activity, the studies show that this style of workout normally brings about a bigger endorphin hit in less time than the long, slow, steady state cardio workouts.

The workouts can take the form of quick 25 minute cardio interval routines, where the most tedious part is the warm up and cool down.

Another option is your traditional circuits style routines, a series of exercises done intensively, each one for 30 seconds, then taking a short rest as you move on to the next exercise. Not only are these workouts fun, you'll burn plenty of calories during and after just a 30 minute workout.

The third option comes in the form of bodyweight, multi-muscle, multi-dimensional exercises done at an intensity and tempo that will exhaust the muscles in your body quickly. Exercises like squats, lunges, step ups, push ups, bodyweight rows and pull ups (Notice I didn't say crunches or sit ups, avoid wasting your precious workout time on exercises that really don't help that much. The reasons... OK that's for another article)

You can set yourself a great workout that is done in 40 minutes with these exercises, all giving you the endorphin rush to boot too!

Many of our clients report a rush of energy and actual enthusiasm when they come to do their workouts! One such client, a particularly stressed and sedentary IT contractor, who really despised the thought of working out at the end of the day, started appearing in the Gym more and more frequently, until I started seeing him there EVERY evening! I questioned him on his new found enthusiasm, he said "I still don't relish the thought of coming to do my workouts, but I get one hell of a kick out of finishing it!!"

So you see there is a solution to your lack of energy and motivation, there truly is a "natural" high from getting short-intensive workouts done. Yes it is tough making the first step, but get yourself in your local gym from tomorrow and get a safe and legal chemical high from a quick and hard workout.

Ten Important Things You Should Know About Weight Loss

1) Rather than try diet after diet, you need to understand your body and how it uses the food it is given. Know which foods cause weight gain and which ones help you lose weight. This may vary from person to person.

2) You need to know and understand your metabolism. Your metabolism plays a major role in weight gain or weight loss. Your metabolism is controlled by the different types of foods you give your body. Some foods will cause the metabolism to become sluggish or shut down completely leading to weight gain. You need to have a good understand on which foods to eat to speed up the metabolism in order to lose weight, and which ones that cause weight gain.

3) When following a specific diet or a fad diet, certain foods may be eliminated, but this can lead to weight gain rather than weight loss. Our body requires certain foods in order to work properly. Understanding and knowing which these foods are will help you towards losing weight.

4) Todays eating habits have gotten so out of control that it is not a wonder our bodies have gotten out of control. We have a tendency today to skip meals or even avoid foods that are necessary to maintain a healthy metabolism/body. But in doing so, for example, you skip meals or eat just once a day, then you risk putting your bodys metabolism into starvation mode. That means everything you eat goes to fat stores to be used later as your body does not understand food is available and it will be fed later.

5) Portion sizes have increased. With all the super sizing and bulk packages we now have we expect more. But by eating larger amounts at a time, our bodies can not use up all this extra food, which leads to ours bodies getting larger/fat. Getting back to eating smaller meals more often and eating the right combination of foods, should help you lose or control your weight.

6) Some diet programs require you to buy their products however, you will only achieve any weight loss while you consuming the product. This makes you dependent on their product. Wouldnt it better to control your weight naturally rather than depend on products, which can become costly?

7) Diet pills and diet shakes may contain caffeine or amphetamines, which will artificially speed up your metabolism. Over time this can be harmful to your health or may become addictive. Get proper weight control naturally, not artificially.

When we are trying to control our weight, eating the proper foods should not be difficult. Losing weight should not be a struggle nor should it be difficult to introduce good eating habits into your lifestyle. But first, you have to want to understand how certain foods affect your body and also how the body uses the food it is given.

8) Teach your children/family proper nutrition and good eating habits. It is better and also easier to introduce healthy eating habits when your family are young rather than try to change their eating habits later. If your family is eating healthy it will be easier to lose and control your weight.

9) If you follow a diet that stops you eating foods you enjoy and forces you to eat foods which you do not like you will feel cheated and will fall back into your bad eating habits. Follow a program that fits your schedule and your metabolic needs.

10) Exercise is also needed for weight loss. This does not mean getting a membership at your local gym and fitness centre or running a marathon. You need muscle in order to burn fat. If you have been overweight for a period of time you probably have lost your muscle tone. You will have to work on getting some of that back in order to lose weight.

A few simple changes will help get you started. Walk up and down stairs rather than taking the elevator or escalator. If you have a dog, take it for a walk a couple of times a day. Instead of jumping into the car to go to the local shop or dropping the kids off to school, walk if it is within a reasonable distance. If you work or attend classes make time for a walk or a little exercise during your lunch break. If you have to sit most of the day, make a point of getting up periodically and doing a brisk walk around. If you have to stand in one spot for long periods of time, do some jumping jacks or jog on the spot.

Once you start incorporating some exercise into your daily routine, you will find you have more energy and you will also find you will start shedding some of your weight.

Healthy eating habits, knowing what foods to eat, eating smaller portions, and understanding your body and its metabolism is the long term answer for losing weight and also how to keeping it off.

Mary Leahy is a registered nurse with many years experience in nutrition and understands the benefits of a healthier lifestyle. She had the opportunity to observe and study a variety of cultures and their eating habits. With the help of her husband they came up with a healthy eating program designed to help you understand food, lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. http://www.mnb-weightlossprogram.com

Basics of The Grapefruit Diet

The grapefruit diet was a very popular diet in the 1980s. In fact, the origin of this diet can be dated back from 1930. Most experts said that this diet is not an effective one since it will be quite impossible to lose weight with the large consumption of grapefruit. Yet there are some new discoveries about this diet and we may need to think of it again in a new way.

If you take this dieting planning, you will need to eat grapefruit whenever you can. You will also need to drink some grapefruit juice when you are having your meal. Of course the grapefruit juice has to be unsweetened. If you drink cocktails, you should add grapefruit to it. You will even need to add grapefruit to the salads you eat! In fact, the basic idea behind such diet is that grapefruit is fat-free. Besides, it has only few calories. As a result, when you eat more grapefruit, you will probably feel fuller and at the same time you will not be able to take a lot of calories. And you will lose weight since the calorie intake is so small.

According to a recent study, grapefruit diet can help to lose weight. The finding from this study is in fact opposite to the belief of the experts in the 1980s.

When you are on diet, you may need to change your habit of eating. For example, you will need to take fewer carbs if you are taking the Atkins diet. However, this is not the case of grapefruit diet. You do not need to alter your habit of eating. Of course you will still need to do some exercises in order to make the diet even more effective.

According to the study mentioned above, in twelve weeks, one can lose 3.6 pounds if one takes the grapefruit diet and do some exercise everyday. Yet one does not need to alter his / her eating habit in order to lose these 3.6 pounds. The study also reveal that it is also effective if you can drink a glass of grapefruit juice afore every meal. The reduction in weight will be 3.3 pounds in the case. Of course it is also in a period of twelve weeks. Although the pace of losing weight is considered slow, the diet still has its advantage over other dieting plans since you will probably find it a lot easier to stick to this diet.

Weight Lifting Machines for Weight Loss?

New resort style mega health clubs are popping up all over North America. These clubs are packed full of expensive fitness and weight machines that offer hundreds of different ways to workout. You could go to one of these clubs and find a different machine to work the muscles of your arms or legs every day for 3 weeks and never repeat what youve done. Now that sounds very interesting and enticing, but is all of this variety necessary? It certainly is expensive. But do any of these machines help us lose weight? What are they really designed for anyway?

Some of the newer weight lifting machines can cost upwards of $5000 per machine. Each of these machines target specific muscles without affecting any other muscles. This is a technique called muscle isolation. Bodybuilders began doing isolation style exercises to make specific muscles bigger without affecting the other muscles around them. They do this because in competitions they are judged on the specific way they look and how big each muscle is compared to other muscles.

The average gym going person is never, in a million years, going to be in a position where they actually need to make their shoulders slightly larger without affecting their arms or chest because someone might think they look out of balance. However, most of the new gyms have countless machines that are designed to be this specific. Now unless there is a new bodybuilding revolution sweeping across North America that I am not aware of, all of these new weight lifting machines seem to be some what unnecessary.

The truth is most of the people who have a gym membership are there for general fitness and weight loss. Both of which can be accomplished with little or no machine assistance at all. In fact, the more muscles you work in each exercise the more calories you are going to burn, and the more overall change you will make to your body. These new weight machines are designed for the exact opposite effect. They are designed to only work a few specific muscles.

Weight training machines are great for advanced lifters, athletes and bodybuilders who are interested in shaping and building specific muscles. Whole body exercises that involve working the most muscles with each exercise are the quickest and most effective path to weight loss and fitness.

Weight Loss with Slim Fast

Slim fast has been around for several years and now has a new look. They have added food items to there product list. They now have snack bars to help you make it through the day. Probably the most significant thing they are marketing is a new dieting concept

Slim fast is moving from a diet plan that was primarily to help lose a few vanity pounds. They have introduced an aggressive diet plan to help those who need to lose more than a few vanity pound. After reviewing there revised diet plan, I like the new plan much better. I have been fairly active all my life and the thought of going though a half a day on a souped up milk shake didn't set to well with me. Their new dieting philosophy appears to recognize that problem. The slim fast shake is not a stand alone meal any more although they call their shake a meal on the run. They also seem to be suggesting several small meals during the day. This several small meals concept has been around for quite some time and has gained acceptance with some dietitians. In between their low calorie meals they recommend snacking on the specially formulated snack bars to suppress any hunger.

Their shake mixes and snack bars are formulated to provide many necessary nutrients and vitamins. I was encouraged to see their recommended food suggestion to be eaten along with the shake. Weight Loss Habits, Follow Them and Smile

It is very obvious at this point that most people regard weight loss as something related to their personal suffering, it is as if every single weight loss program required your sacrifice in order to actually work. If you are thinking about issues like starvation, desertion, doubt and deprivation, then you know exactly what I'm talking about; but weight loss should not be that way for anyone.

If you go to a personal trainer in order to change your weight loss habits, then he will tell you a few basic things: no more eating, exercising every day, wake up at 6 am and go to bed at 10, change the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you think, and overall they want to change your very self. Now, do you really think that weight loss is all about being a whole different person? Well, it's not! Weight loss is a procedure that people follow in order to eliminate a few excessive pounds out of their bodies, however, by no means should you become another person, and you should not follow something that makes you feel uncomfortable.

In order to change your weight loss habits you will need to start on your head, get rid of that concept you may have about having to become another person in order to lose some weight, get rid of that idea that your brain holds so tightly about having to suffer in order to be a slender individual, and finally, get rid of your self image of being tortured just to follow your weight loss procedures.

The thing is that, weight loss can actually be a very rewarding process, not only in terms of the results it provides, but mostly in the procedure itself. Following a weight loss procedure can actually be very exciting, you can perform the activities that you enjoy the most, have fun while doing them and at the same time, lose a few extra pounds. You can also begin to enjoy the healthier foods that you ingest every day; once you get over the idea that junk food is the bomb, you will get to understand that there are plenty of different flavors out there just waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.

Always keep in mind that your weight loss habits should not make you feel depressed, but the complete opposite; your weight loss habits should be some of the things that provoke a smile to appear on your face.

7 Ways to Improve Your Cholesterol (and Lose Weight!)

Now all these years people have been worried about high cholesterol levels. But in addition to lowering bad cholesterol, a new study shows that high levels of GOOD cholesterol should also be the focus of our efforts.

In fact, your levels of HDL could be the most important determinant of your risk for heart disease.

First, some definitions...

LDL (low-density lipoprotein): LDL is also known as the "bad" cholesterol. It is the cholesterol that builds up in your arteries, increasing your risk of heart disease.

HDL (high-density lipoprotein): HDL is also known as the "good" cholesterol. It helps clean out LDL from your arteries, and can decrease your risk of heart disease.

If your HDL is not above 40 mg/dL, then you need to improve it and have it checked every year.

TC (total cholesterol): This is the total amount of cholesterol in the blood, including LDL, HDL, and VLDL. If your total cholesterol is 240 mg/dL or greater, you have a greater risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.

TC:HDL-C ratio: This is called the "total cholesterol to HDL ratio." It is used to give doctors an idea of how much total cholesterol a person has relative to the HDL level. The ratio is calculated by dividing the total cholesterol by the HDL. It is a good measure of heart disease risk.

Okay, now onto the latest findings...this recent study published in the American Heart Journal found that patients that had higher HDL levels had a lower risk of heart attacks. More specifically, people with higher HDL (by 10 mg/dL) had an 11% decrease in heart disease risk.

Okay...so what does that mean? Do everything you can to increase your HDL!

First, you need to get your HDL levels checked...so visit your doctor. And always check with your doctor before making big changes to your nutrition and exercise plan...especially if you are overweight, or otherwise at risk for lifestyle diseases.

Second, a good place to start improving your cholesterol levels is to simply lose weight and to start an exercise program (both aerobic exercise and resistance training will improve cholesterol levels).

And when it comes to achieving healthy cholesterol levels, here are many more specific actions that you should take:

- Eat 6 small meals per day rather than 2-3 large meals.

- Eat a handful of almonds per day (make sure they are not roasted in hydrogenated oils!)

- Eat more fiber by eating almonds, fruits, vegetables, oatmeal, and perhaps even supplement with glucomannan - Get a minimum of 35g of fiber per day

- Reduce your intake of saturated fats & eliminate all trans fats from your diet

- Build muscle mass. There's some evidence that strength-training exercises that build muscle mass can also improve HDL.

- Do intervals - these might be even more effective than regular cardio for increasing HDL

- Both Green Tea and fish oils might help improve cholesterol levels (by both increasing HDL and lowering LDL), but research is not conclusive.

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar Weight Loss

The ability to lose weight naturally is a very desirable condition. Adopting an apple cider vinegar diet into your regimen is the ideal approach for weight loss that does not involve stimulants or diet pills. The plan is pretty straightforward and the results are absolutely stunning.

No one likes to carry extra pounds but few of us have the means to naturally rev up the metabolic rate while keeping cravings under control. There are some simple steps that dieters can take to ensure that they can drop weight naturally and with relatively little effort.

While the apple cider vinegar diet is not miracle cure, it is a viable resource for weight loss without suffering. The secret to the diet's success is thought to lie in the combination of the vinegar's acidic nature and the natural pectin found in apples. The combination serves as a means of getting the metabolism fueled and ready to burn.

One of the health benefits of apple cider vinegar is the product's ability to lower cholesterol. Pectin is a key factor in reducing cholesterol in the body. While there is no scientific connection between the lowered cholesterol and weight loss, there does seem to be a correlation when it comes to this nectar.

The apple cider weight loss plan is simple to follow. There are no restricted menus and nothing is really off limits. However, dieters do have to practice restraint when it comes to snack foods and their meals have to be in sensible proportions. Of course, water is on the top of the list of priorities.

Dieters just take between one and three teaspoons of the vinegar before each meal. This gives the supplement time to rev the metabolism while curbing the appetite. Beginners should start with just one teaspoon before each meal and gradually work their way to three teaspoons.

Add a little light exercise into your daily routine and you have the makings of a simple weight loss plan that actually seems too good to be true. Following the plan is quite easy. All that is necessary is the capacity to remember to take the vinegar before each meal. If the nectar is too much for your stomach, you may want to opt for apple cider vinegar pills instead.

Weight loss is an ongoing process for many people who opt for fad diets and trendy weight reduction plans. The apple cider vinegar diet is ideal because it offers a natural weight loss remedy without a restrictive eating regimen.

Weight Loss: Add Chocolate to Your Diet?

Before you run out and stock up on chocolate bars, read the whole article please. Yes! Yes! Yes! There really ARE health benefits of chocolate, and it CAN be a part of a weight loss program. There are a few things to know first.

First we talk about the boring stuff...free radicals, antioxidants, and flavonoids:

Free radicals: These little rascals, I mean radicals, are unstable atoms or groups of atoms that occur in the body as a result of everyday atomic processes in reaction to such intrusive things as pollution, cigarette smoke, and sunlight. They are a natural part of the process of being alive, but they can damage cells, and research seems to implicate them, at least to some extent, in the growth of cancer, cardiovascular disease, strokes, cataracts, and other problems related to age.

Antioxidants: The free radicals are unstable because they have lost an electron, and they begin to steal electrons from other atoms and molecules within the body. This creates more free radicals and more damage, even to the DNA itself. Antioxidants have an extra electron to spare and lend it to the free radicals, thereby stopping their destructive rampage. The antioxidants will also turn the free radical into a waste product, allowing it to be flushed (no pun intended) from the body. There are many antioxidants, but some of the more common sources are vitamins C & E. They are also available in many fruits and vegetables.

Flavonoids: Android, asteroid? No relation. Flavonoids are pretty common throughout nature, and they are anti- a lot of bad health things. As you may have guessed, they are also antioxidants. They are found in all kinds of stuff, such as red wine, tea, and beer...AND...Chocolate! Oh yeah! You can also eat the fruits and veggies mentioned above and get them, but chocolate's more fun, right?

NOW THE BAD NEWS ABOUT CHOCOLATE

Not all chocolate is created equal...at least in the finished product. The more processing that is involved generally removes more of the flavonoids. Therefore, dark chocolate probably contains the most flavonoids and provides the most antioxidant qualities.

Unfortunately, chocolate by itself doesn't taste too good, so to make it palatable, fats and sugars are added. Those are the really bad things about chocolate, particularly if you are on a diet or in some other type of weight loss program

CHOCOLATE AND WEIGHT LOSS

As you can imagine, there is not a lot you can do about the ingredients added to chocolate. These ingredients are, for the most part, exactly the sort of things you need to avoid in your diet or on your weight loss program. However, regularly adding reasonable amounts of chocolate products to your diet can help you attain your weight loss goals in indirect ways.

Occasional chocolate treats are not of any great importance if you are doing everything else right. One candy bar or chocolate chip cookie is not going to destroy a week's worth of adherence to your weight loss program. In fact, knowing that you can allow yourself a treat or reward for "being good" can help you get over some of the tough parts. This is particularly true if you have the sort of self control to keep portion sizes reasonable and spaced at sensible intervals.

You can also be proactive and head off the "carb cravings" that sometimes push you over the edge by drinking some low-carb chocolate milk for example. You won't get as much of the benefits from the flavonoids, but satisfying yourself in advance with the taste and texture of the drink, or other snack, may help you retain control.

One of the major reasons diets and other weight loss programs fail is because people feel deprived. It is better to commit the occasional small dietary sin than to give up completely. Integrating chocolate and other foods you enjoy in controlled-portion servings can help you make your weight loss plan a success.

Three Shocking Weight Loss Secrets You Probably Don't Know

If your goal is to lose weight in 2008, then congratulate yourself. You're on the path to better health, more self-confidence, and overall well being.

Did you know that it's easier to lose weight than you think? The secret is in adding small changes that gradually build up over time into large lifestyle renovations. Trying to do too much too fast is often the culprit of burnout, and is the reason why many people tend to give up.

Before you put too much on your plate, so to speak, take a look at these three weight loss secrets that will help you on your way to a healthier body.

1.) Break up your workout routines - Walking is one of the best ways to lose weight, especially for people who aren't as athletic or for those just starting out a new exercise routing. Studies have shown that adding just 30 minutes of walking per day is enough to encourage weight loss. However, did you know that you can break up your walking routine into 10 minute sessions and it's just as effective? In fact, it might be even more effective because you're constantly getting up and moving around instead of tiring yourself out in one go.

2.) Take A Nap - Nope, you're not being lazy! Studies have shown that getting enough sleep is crucial to overall health as well as maintaining a good body weight. Weight gain can be aggravated by poor sleep habits. If you don't sleep well at night and feel tired, go take a cat nap! Not only will you give your body much needed rest, but napping is also beneficial to your brain function so you'll feel more alert.

3.) Eat More Often - This might seem counter-intuitive, but the fact is that eating more often keeps your metabolism running at a high rate. When you wait a long time between meals your blood sugar can drop and you will feel very hungry. When you "graze" throughout the day your blood sugar will remain even and you won't be as inclined to overdo it at mealtime. Studies show that eating 4-5 meals per day is highly effective at helping people drop pounds.

Would Smoking and Drinking Affect My Gym Training?

Dear dailymuscle,

I'm 21 years old and trying to quit doing the unhealthy things I do to my body and here's my problem. I started smoking and drinking a couple of months ago (vodka), and last night was one of the nights I went overboard and drank way too much. I hate the terrible, worthless feeling I get the next day as I don't feel like training at the gym today due to this feeling. I just feel like staying in bed all day..

I know this is a stupid question but would smoking and drinking affect my gym training (I know it affects cardio cause it screws up your lungs)?

~the thirsty trainer

Dear thirsty trainer,

Thanks for writing in.

Drinking and smoking while trying to achieve practically any fitness goal are the exact opposites and dont mix. Drinking can compromise your goals especially if fatloss is one of them. I've read that the liver can take days to get rid of the alcohol in ones body and so one of its main jobs of filtering fat comes to a standstill and it packs it away for processing later (which never comes of course).

Still not convinced? Okay try this - have a can of beer (or any other alcoholic beverage) just before your workout and let me know if you have a productive workout.

It's a matter of priorities, especially at your young age of which path you want to choose. Many people think that they can counteract their smoking and drinking habits by doing enough exercise, not realising that they are only fooling themselves of the harm they are doing to themselves.

There is research out there that says alcohol in moderation has benefits, but I would not recommend anyone that doesn't drink to start solely for these benefits. Hey, Schwarzenegger smokes cigars too, however, I believe that they are the exceptions. I'd rather stay away from it if I were you.

You know what the right decision is - otherwise you wouldnt be asking about it here ;)

Good luck!

Liver Detox Diet

You probably know by now that the liver is one of the most important organs in the human body. It's the body's natural filter that helps convert toxins into substances that can be discarded easily. Therefore, to have a healthy body, it is of vital importance that we keep this important organ in good condition. A healthy liver means a healthy body. One of the ways to help maintain your liver in good working condition is to go on a liver detox diet.

Since the liver is the first to receive toxins that enter the body, it has one of the highest toxin accumulations in the body. While the liver's main task is to clean the toxins and other wastes that are absorbed by the bloodstream in the body, the liver does not always able to discard hard substances such as heavy metals. Some of these toxins don't end up leaving the body and then what will happen is that there will be a type of toxin buildup throughout the body, especially the liver. Therefore, it is more important to detox the liver than detoxification of any other body system. The objective of a liver detox diet is to cleanse the liver of all the toxic wastes that have stagnated in the liver over the years.

A liver detox diet involves a person restricting oneself to organic foods such as raw vegetables, fruits and whole grains. The 2 ingredients that the liver needs in order to function properly are water and glucose. These ingredients aid the body's system to get rid of accumulated toxins. So, drinking a lot of water helps as it helps to flush toxins out of your system. A person on a liver detox diet must avoid foods that are not liver friendly such as fried and processed foods, sugar, coffee and saturated fats.

All in all, a complete liver detoxification will help to restore functionality to the liver as well as to the rest of the body. All of the body's organs are vitally important to maintaining a healthy body, but cleansing your liver will help the most! If you're experiencing poor health, aching body, tired most of the time, go on a liver detox diet.

Guaranteed Super Fast Weight Loss - Here's the Secret

There's only one way I know for absolutely guaranteed super fast weight loss!

And here's the secret...!

Go on a 28 day "water only" or "vegetable juice only" fast!

So I absolutely do not recommend this for you. It's too dangerous... especially so if your health is already compromised with obesity and all its concurrent health issues. I don't want the responsibility and I don't imagine that even your Doctor would take on the responsibility of recommending this for you.

There is an easy, safe way to lose weight quickly which I'll share with you in a moment.

But I'm reminded of a story: Years ago in Australia I did meet a young 25 year old couple just after they had returned from a month long vacation in isolation in the far north of Queensland on the Great Barrier Reef - and they had fasted, water only, for a month. I have to say they were absolutely glowing with health. Their eyes sparkled and their skin was glowing and blemish free.

They told me that after 20 days they had gone into the nearest town and stood gazing with desire at the cakes in a store window. They managed to get out of town without breaking their fast... but it was touch and go.

I was very taken with how healthy they looked and thought how much I would like to look like that. But I could never last past 24 hours... so much for the fasting idea... besides being dangerous it's just way too difficult to go the distance. But there is an easy way to lose weight... and quickly. And you don't need to battle with hunger while you're at it.

The trick is to get control of that carbohydrate craving so we're not continually driven to grab those forbidden high GI snacks that have defeated us in the past and caused us to fall off the weight loss program.

Kill the carb craving and you've got a shot at some serious long term weight loss.

Let me show you how to kill the carb craving without ever having to feel any hunger. If you do feel hungry... well you can just eat some more! I can show you how to get this started in just 5 days! You'll lose 5 pounds in 5 days or 10 pounds in 10 days and you won't be hungry... it will be easy! I have recently written a book entitled "Lose Weight - Never Go Hungry" which lays out a plan for overcoming Carbohydrate addiction and losing weight.

You can download it FREE here: "Lose Weight - Never Go Hungry"

A Marriage of Weight Loss and Body Cleansing

In today's fast paced world few have time to hit the gyms, eat right or exercise at home like we should. This lack of time to focus on exercise can present a serious health problem. I found myself sitting in an office day after day, eating fast food due to lack of free time, working myself to the bone. When I would get home at night I found myself still working and leaving little time for loosing weight, getting in shape or taking care of my health. I searched for a weight lose solution that wasn't the typical, "don't eat fatty foods, go on a low carb diet or join a weight watchers program." I am a busy person and don't have time for that.

What I found was a solution called, "The Top Secret Weight Loss Secret" by Dr. Suzanne Gudakunst. The basis of this program is the elimination harmful parasites, bacteria and micro-organisms that live inside of you. I am not a doctor, however, after hours of research I discovered everybody has them. If left to live and breed inside your stomach, small and large intestines and colon, they will eventually cause you to puff up, gain lots of weight, get sick more often, and could take many years off your life. I know what you are thinking and it's the same thing I was. There is not way a build up of bacteria could be making me fat, right? Once you read the website that I and see the pictures that I discovered it may change your mind.

Here is what changed my own opinion. Ironically my roommate was using this very same cleansing system while I was researching it. As you can imagine I asked him how it was working. He stated he would rather show me and then I would better understand. The next day he called me into the bathroom and what I was in the toilet was absolutely awful. It looked like something out of an science fiction movie!. I exclaimed, "Did that thing come out of you?" He replied, "Yes, do you think I would find something like this and put it in to toilet just to see the look on your face?" I laughed and then felt like disgusted that something like this could come out of me as well.

The very fact that I had a buildup of bacteria, parasites and undigested food slowing me down and causing me to gain weight absolutely disgusted me. I immediately went online and ordered the Top Secret Weight Loss Secret for a mere $37.00, which showed me how to cleanse my system. A month later I am feeling better, have more energy and surprisingly lost 20 pounds. I wanted to share my experience with anyone in a similar situation like me. I was lucky enough know someone in real life who had this experience or I would never have believed it. Now you have met that person too.

Visit the creators website to find out more about this system, you'll be glad that you did!

The Weight Loss Secret - How To Use Exercises For Weight Loss!

The often neglected but crucial aspect of every weight loss program is exercise. While assisting with the rate of weight loss, exercise primarily trains the body to release and burn fats for energy and adds a good muscle tone.

Modifying the diet with the addition of exercise to the regimen works wonders for people following various weight loss programs.

Exercise helps control blood sugar levels without bringing insulin into play. Exercise also helps the body develop the ability to mobilize fat stores for energy. It raises the metabolic rate for a sustained period of time and also helps in increasing the production of enzymes that pull fat out from storage. The positive effects of exercise are many. Maintenance of lean tissues and raised basal metabolic rate continues long after exercise is discontinued.

In fact, many experts believe that achieving weight loss through exercising is much more effective when compared to dieting.

People who diet without exercising mostly lose water and some muscle too. What happens is, when you are on a diet and not eating enough food, your body fights back. However, if you exercise for at least 30 minutes daily, you will burn fat and retain muscle. You may not even have to cut down on food, fat is burned through exercise at a fast rate and quick weight loss is achieved.

Powerful exercises, such as workouts and turbulence training (details can be checked out at the turbulence training membership site) combined with a good diet, encourage your body to burn calories while adding lean muscle tissue.

fat at the same time, visit http://www.positiveattitude4life.com
