Small Changes Build to Weight Loss

Does this sound familiar....you promise yourself that the next morning you'll totally revamp your food choices, exercise daily, and be successful with your diet plan? Has it worked long-term? If not, maybe you tried to do too much too quickly. It can be overwhelming to make big changes and expect them to stick. Why not try something different? Make small changes to your food choices and exercise. Small changes build to big weight loss success.

In working with my clients, a successful strategy in losing weight and keeping it off is to make one small change at a time. Do you reach the top of a staircase by a giant leap? No, you rise to the top one step at a time. The same for weight loss is to make small changes and allow them to build success one after the other. Before you know it, those changes create a momentum of success that move you forward to your weight loss goals.

1. Eat slowly and calmly. Enjoy the tastes and textures. Put your fork or spoon down between every bite. Intersperse your eating with enjoying the company of others joining you for the meal. Your brain has a delay to your stomach by about 20 minutes when it comes to the feeling of fullness and satisfaction. If you eat slowly enough, your brain will catch up to tell you that you are no longer in need of food.

2. Eat only when you're hungry. Sounds easy but can be challenging to differentiate between your head hunger and hear your stomach truly growling. It is amazing how often we eat out of boredom, nervousness, habit, hobby, recreational sport, or frustration. Unfortunately for some of us that struggle with weight and food issues, we have actually forgotten what physical hunger and the cues feel like. Next time, wait until your stomach is growling before you reach for food. If you're craving a specific food, it's probably a craving, not hunger. It's probably your head that's hungry rather than your stomach. If you'd eat anything you could get your hands on, chances are you're truly physically hungry.

3. Out of sight, out of mind. The other day I found a surprise lurking in my refrigerator. It was a holiday treat from Thanksgiving that got pushed behind other items in the refrigerator. I'd forgotten all about this little treat put in the refrigerator because I didn't see it. Fast forward to how it looked today; it was petrified and looked awful. Seeing this Thanksgiving goodie that I'd kept that looked delicious in November to its current appearance was disgusting. It sure put the food choice into perspective. You aren't tempted if you don't see it. Even further, if you don't buy it or bring it home, you aren't tempted either. Keep your trigger foods out of your radar.

4. Empower yourself with the trash. Huh? My husband brought home leftover food from a work function he attended. It was not the best nutritional choice for anyone. Rather than keep it around, I threw it away. It felt so empowering to throw away the unhealthy food item. I chose the health of myself and my family over the temporary enjoyment of eating an undesirable food choice. You and your health are more important than any fleeting food fix

You don't have to undertake all of the changes in your lifestyle all at once. You've done that before. Did it result in long-lasting change? Probably not. Try something different. If you want different results, try it in a different way. Small changes build to big changes. Before you know it, you'll step on the scale and see your goal weight. Small changes can equal big success.

6 Things You Ought To Know Before Dieting

Surf the net and you will surely find gazillions of ways to diet - from plans that disallow eating after 7pm to programs that only permit the drinking fruit juices for 10 days. Despite the overwhelming number of ways to lose weight, a lot of people are still struggling with their fight against the bulge. In fact, figures show that over 58 million adult Americans are overweight and about 40 million are obese.

One of the reasons why many diets fail is that not all people are prepared and equipped to handle dieting. Simply buying a book about your diet choice or downloading diet recipes from the Internet is not sufficient to ensure that your weight-loss goals will be achieved. So, here are some diet tips you need to know before starting any weight-loss program.

Know Your Goal

Simply waking up one day and realizing that you need to shed off those excess pounds is a good start but it is not enough. First, you need to set a goal. Will you be happy with losing two pounds? Or do you plan to really slash off 30 pounds from your weight? If you do not know how much you want to lose, you are like a marathon runner who is lost and does not know his or her destination.

No To Fast Fixes

You did not gain 15 pounds overnight so it would also be impossible for you to lose that flab in a flash. Diet fads may really make you 10 or more pounds lighter in a week, but there is a big chance that you will regain those pounds again (plus some more) once you return to your old ways. If a diet program promises you to lose a lot in a very short period of time, do not put your trust in it instantly. Consider whether it promotes a healthy lifestyle or it is just one of those starve-yourself-to-death diets.

Opt For Healthy Changes

Your thighs became thicker and your waist bigger probably because of years of unhealthy eating habits. If you want to lose weight, you ought to be prepared to change your food preferences. Instead of eating fried chicken morning till night, why don't you try getting salad and increasing your fruit intake? Instead of reaching out for a bag of fries, why don't you munch on corn on a cob instead? Little changes such as these will have a dramatic impact not only on your weight, but your general health as well.

Find A Diet Peer

Some people succeed doing things alone. However, most people are more effective in a team. If you have been unsuccessful with dieting all by yourself, you should start looking for a peer you can diet and lose weight with. Your diet buddy will help encourage you to stay on track. Furthermore, the two of you can share tips, experiences, and other things that can help improve your approach to dieting.

Do Some Exercise

Dieting is important in shedding off pounds. However, if you do not exercise, your arms, legs and other parts will be flabby. In order for your weight loss to be complete and healthy, you need to do some aerobic exercises and a little weight training. You really do not have to look muscular, all you need is to tone and tighten your butt, abs, upper arms and thighs.

Don't Ever Give Up

If you want to be healthy and fit, you need to keep on going and maintain your healthy lifestyle. Dieting can be hard and you will surely find a few obstacles on your way to achieving your goal. However, just keep on going because once you stop, all the sacrifice and efforts you exerted will just be put to waste.

To help you with your objective of becoming thinner and healthier, you can count on exercise and right diet. One product that can help initiate your weight loss is Phenocal, which helps suppress appetite and boost metabolism. If you want to know more about this product, just visit http://www.phenocal.com/.

Quality Canada Weight Loss Prescription

These days, proper diet and exercise do not seem to be doing the trick anymore when it comes to losing weight that is why people are turning to a Canada weight loss prescription. Opting for a Canada weight loss prescription ensures safety and more guarantee that you can lose weight since doctors and experts are recommending the prescribed weight loss drug.

For obesity
Originally, the Canada weight loss prescription is only given to obese people or for those who are nearing obesity, which can be dangerous to their health. However, these prescription drugs do not just work like magic. These people still need to take those weight loss drugs while maintaining proper diet and exercise.

Are you obese?
If your BMI (Body Mass Index) is 27 or higher and you are also at risk for heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol, your doctor may need to give you a Canada weight loss prescription. However, some of these medications are for short-term usage only.

Types of prescription medications
Check with your physician first before taking on any of these weight loss prescription drugs that can be classified in two ways:

1. Appetite suppressants These are prescribed to people who have other medical conditions along with being obese and they need to lose weight to maintain perfect health. These are never prescribed to pregnant women, people with heart disease, those suffering from liver or kidney failure, and those with glaucoma. Examples of popular appetite suppressants are phentermine and fenfluramine, however, they have been taken out of the market because of their side effects linked to heart diseases. Other examples that are still available include sibutramine and diethylproprion.

2. Fat blockers These types of medication are for preventing the body from absorbing fats and expelling them through bowel movement. Popular examples of these are Orlistat and Xenical. Known side effects include frequent and oily bowel movements, gas, and discharge. However, these side effects are reduced along with the reduction of fat intake.

Would Smoking and Drinking Affect My Gym Training?

Dear dailymuscle,

I'm 21 years old and trying to quit doing the unhealthy things I do to my body and here's my problem. I started smoking and drinking a couple of months ago (vodka), and last night was one of the nights I went overboard and drank way too much. I hate the terrible, worthless feeling I get the next day as I don't feel like training at the gym today due to this feeling. I just feel like staying in bed all day..

I know this is a stupid question but would smoking and drinking affect my gym training (I know it affects cardio cause it screws up your lungs)?

~the thirsty trainer

Dear thirsty trainer,

Thanks for writing in.

Drinking and smoking while trying to achieve practically any fitness goal are the exact opposites and dont mix. Drinking can compromise your goals especially if fatloss is one of them. I've read that the liver can take days to get rid of the alcohol in ones body and so one of its main jobs of filtering fat comes to a standstill and it packs it away for processing later (which never comes of course).

Still not convinced? Okay try this - have a can of beer (or any other alcoholic beverage) just before your workout and let me know if you have a productive workout.

It's a matter of priorities, especially at your young age of which path you want to choose. Many people think that they can counteract their smoking and drinking habits by doing enough exercise, not realising that they are only fooling themselves of the harm they are doing to themselves.

There is research out there that says alcohol in moderation has benefits, but I would not recommend anyone that doesn't drink to start solely for these benefits. Hey, Schwarzenegger smokes cigars too, however, I believe that they are the exceptions. I'd rather stay away from it if I were you.

You know what the right decision is - otherwise you wouldnt be asking about it here ;)

Good luck!

Weight Loss with Chinese Herbs

Chinese herbs can be used to influence the bodys metabolism in different ways. Most people who need to lose weight would like to have their metabolism run more efficiently. There are a number of herbs that can help people in their quest for a healthier, more efficient metabolism in order to ensure that any efforts to lose weight are blessed with success. There are three types of herbs that can assist people trying to lose weight. The first type of herb is the type that transforms phlegm in Chinese medicine terminology. These herbs can help the body to process fats more efficiently and prevent the accumulation of unhealthy fats and fluids in the body. Some herbs in this class that may assist weight loss include citrus aurantium, immature citrus peel, and magnolia bark. Glechoma and hawthorn berry can also help by transforming phlegm.

Citrus Aurantium contains synephrine, which has been shown to have fat-burning properties in research done at McGill University in Montreal. It improves the thermogenesis of brown fatty tissue in the body, which is generally the fat that is the most difficult to burn off. Citrus Aurantium does not have any negative impact on the nervous system like ephedra does. Speaking of ephedra, I do not recommend its use for dieting. Chinese medicine has traditionally used it for severe and acute conditions, such as asthma attacks. It is not intended to be used as a dieting tool or to get a high. These uses can leave a person ultimately more fatigued and adrenal-depleted in the end. Citrus Aurantium is an infinitely safer option for those interested in weight loss.

Other herbs that can help boost metabolic function are herbs that increase the qi and yang energy of the body. This class of herbs includes ginseng, astragalus, and atractylodes. Other herbs in this category include ginger, cinnamon, epimedium and eucommia bark. These herbs can also give a person an energy boost. This can encourage the person to remain consistent with his or her exercise routine. These herbs also encourage healthy digestion and generally make a persons metabolism run faster and more efficiently. This group of herbs can be particularly helpful for those people whose weight tends to accumulate around the abdomen.

Detoxifying, bitter herbs are another class of herbs that can assist with weight loss. These herbs tend to reduce inflammatory, acidic conditions in the body that often trigger the cravings people have for inordinate quantities of unhealthy food. These herbs are particularly useful in people who tend to have voracious appetites for spicy, oily, and sweet foods. They also may have a tendency towards acne or oily skin, and a slightly reddish, or ruddy complexion. These herbs include Chinese rhubarb, coptis, and scute.

Other herbs can be used to control and balance out the emotional conditions that trigger overeating. People who find themselves eating out of stress, sadness, depression, anxiety, or PMS can find that these herbs balance out their emotional life and reduce their cravings for food. These herbs include magnolia bark, bupleurum root, mint, zizyphus and biota seeds, and longan fruit.

Other supplements that can assist in a healthy weight loss program are kelp, apple cider vinegar, vitamin B6, and flaxseed oil. Drinking green tea regularly can also be quite helpful.

It is important to remember that all of these supplements are beneficial for promoting weight loss because they promote a healthy metabolism, a healthy energy level, a healthy digestion, and a healthy mental attitude, but that dietary and lifestyle changes are crucial in order to see the results that you want. Nevertheless, Chinese Medicine can be a great ally in the quest to shed pounds more efficiently.

Cardio Increases Appetite

Does aerobic training burn fat? It should, but why are so many people still overweight, no matter how much long slow exercise they do? Cardio exercise is such a strange thing. In theory, it should work so perfectly well for all men and women, but as anyone who has tried it knows, the practicality of it just doesn't add up.

After all, some men and women do cardio 6 hours, 9 hours, or more per week, and still have belly fat to burn. On the other hand, it works just fine for others. And you know who it works best for? Young, fit males. The guys who don't need any help! Young guys can workout all day long, they have nothing else to do. The guys who have a fast metabolism, exercise a lot, and have plenty of muscle.

It works for them, but does it work for you? Probably not. British researchers wanted to get more insight into this paradox, and studied 35 overweight men and women, who weren't previously exercising.

(Reference: International Journal of Obesity 32: 177-184, 2008).

Subjects exercised 5 times per week for 12 weeks. That's a lot of exercise, but it helped the subjects lose an average of 8.You should lose a lot of weight with cardio - if it worked. So cardio will work for some people, however, in my experience, it works best in young men, who need the help the least!

Back to the study, the variance in fat loss between individuals was huge. Check this out...

The best subject lost a staggering 32.3 pounds in 12 weeks, while the worst subject actually GAINED 3.74 pounds. The scientists think they know where things went sour. They classified the subjects into 2 groups, called the "Compensators" and the "Non-compensators".

The Compensators were hungrier, and as a result consumed an extra 268 calories per day, all but wiping out their cardio efforts. Therefore, the Compensators lost the least amount of weight, and scientists believe that was due to the huge "compensatory" increase in appetite experienced by this group.

Does your appetite increase when you do slow cardio? Cardio might increase your appetite.

So if your cardio program is not working for you, check your appetite and calorie intake to see if you are "compensating" for your efforts. If you are, you might be better off using a program of high-intensity resistance and interval training (i.e. Turbulence Training) for your weight loss efforts.

Researchers have proven intervals burn fat. And increased catecholamines can reduce appetite, among other fat- burning benefits. In the real world, few people lose 33 pounds after 12 weeks of cardio. Heck, few even achieve an average weight loss of 8 pounds with aerobic exercise.

So again, check your appetite, and consider giving high-intensity exercise a go for your next workout program. Beat the curse of cardio with high-intensity fat burning workouts that don't use cardio.

Desserts and the Key to Maintaining Weight Loss

Satisfying the proverbial sweet tooth and losing weight or keeping off the pounds that you have already lost can be a daunting task. When you see the dessert, you want to eat it the whole thing and worry about the extra calories later. This method does not always work well when trying to keep the weight off. There are some desserts out that can help keep the weight off and satisfy your craving for sweets.

Fruit cobblers, yogurt mixtures, fruit pies, and low fat cakes are just a few. However, the key to maintaining your weight loss, having your cake and eating it to is in watching your portion size. You can always run into the problem of too much of a good thing. You want to look at the desserts calorie count and fat grams associated with the portion size before you begin eating the dessert. You must consider the calorie count associated with your diet and determine if you can have the entire portion size or if you need to eat just half of the portion to stay in line with your diet. If you dont have the will power to resist the whole portion of a dessert high in calories and fat, then fix the whole, appropriate portion size and throw away of the portion before you sit down to eat it. You can not eat a dessert that is not there.

Now there are some healthy desserts with natural ingredients that you can eat the entire portion, satisfy your sweet tooth craving and stay on your diet. These delicious desserts can be prepared quickly and easily. Dont worry you dont have to be a master chef to do it.

For example, fruit pies are a delicious dessert that can be prepared in a manner that yields them low in calories and low in fat. You can begin by washing and draining your fresh fruit. Some fruits that make great pies are apples, peaches or berries. Cut up the fruit as necessary into bite-sized chunks or slices and put it in a bowl. You can add a sugar substitute to your taste or leave the fruit in its naturally sweet state. Then pour the fruit mixture into a pre-made pie crust thats in a foil pie pan. Be careful not to overfill the pie pan with the fruit mixture. Add one tablespoon of butter (if desired) cut into small pieces and drop the butter chunks through out the fruit mixture that is in the pie pan. Take another pie crust and put it on top. Cut slits in the top pie crust for ventilation. Bake the fruit pie in the oven at about 350 degrees for 40 to 50 minutes or until the pie crust is lightly brown. Let it cool and enjoy!

Yogurt shakes are also an enjoyable low calorie and low fat treat. You can take some low fat yogurt and blend it with your favorite fruit to make a yogurt shake. Or you can add your favorite nuts or add one or two low fat cookies to your yogurt, blend it, and make a crunchy, enjoyable cool treat.

So enjoy and indulge your sweet tooth with appropriately portioned, delicious, healthy desserts that are low in calories and low in fat while you keep the weight off.

What Diets Work?

That's the question we're going to answer! First off all I would like to congratulate you for coming here! So many people fall prey to diet scams and listen to every new fad that comes out (DAILY!). Did you know that 90% of all popular diets fail? In fact many of them cause health problems at the same time. It's time to break this endless cycle. That's why you're here, and I won't disappoint you. Let's get started!

What Diets work? The Diet's that work are the ones which don't have negative side effects, the ones that help you lose weight and KEEP it off and the ones which also improve your well being. So which diets do this?

Diet #1: Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar and Eating Flaxseeds daily. Both of these products help improve your digestive system and slowly cause weight loss to happen. You can expect to lose 10 pounds in 3 weeks. Both can be found in your local health food store.

Diet #2: Walking 30 minutes a day. No matter who you are I think it is possible to find at least 30 minutes a day to walk! Doing this on a daily basis helps increase and drill your metabolism. You will see results in 3-4 weeks.

Diet #3: Eat virgin coconut oil. You can find these in your local health food store. Whenever you fry something, just use this oil instead of other cooking oils. Coconut oil is rich in healthy nutrients that help restore the body's function. If the body's functions are restored, then weight loss will follow as will increased energy and overall a healthier you. Coconut oil is very tasty and I highly recommend this one! If you want to lose weight with it you can expect to see results in 3 1/2- 4 weeks.

Diet #4: Seaweed. You can also buy these in your local health food store. They are known as "KELP". Seaweed feeds of the 7 rays of the sun and salt water full of vitamins and nutrients and concentrates them into itself. So when you eat it you're getting all these vitamins and minerals in you! So your body can regenerate and cause weight loss. Weight loss can be seen within 3 weeks + restored energy.

Diet #5: Calorie Shifting. This is the FASTEST and easiest of all these diets to complete because you don't have to do anything special. No exercise and no buying special products! You can even keep eating your favorite foods. Calorie shifting is a technique that enhances your metabolism and fat burning system. You can lose up to 10 pounds or more in less than 2 weeks.

Here is a valuable article about calorie shifting I recommend you read: How To Lose 10 Pounds In 10 Days. It explains calorie shifting.

You will understand how calorie shifting works and why it's so effective. So again what diets work? The answer is these 5. But in terms of fastest and most effective, calorie shifting takes the cake! (I didn't mean to say cake!)

Weight Loss Tip #3 - Eat Breakfast Every Day

Back in the caveman days, our metabolism adjusted based on whether or not we were getting enough food over a short period of time. If there was plenty to eat, our metabolism took advantage of that surplus and started to speed up, allowing us to do more work and expend more energy. If there wasn't a lot of food available and our daily intake was dwindling, our bodies adapted to that and slowed our metabolism.

It works the same way today--studies show repeatedly that not eating all morning long, and then having a big meal later, makes you gain weight; whereas dividing the exact same number of calories over five or six smaller meals during the day will result in weight loss. Eating breakfast starts your metabolism going because your body recognizes there is energy available to use.

Some people even get discouraged when they start eating breakfast because then they are hungry three hours later. "Before, I could go all day without eating" they complain, "and now I keep feeling like I have to eat something every three or four hours". Guess what? That's because your body is using what you fed it and ready for more energy to keep going. Let me ask you my favorite Dr. Phil question if you are not successful at weight loss and you do not eat breakfast ... "How's that working for you?"

Now, let's figure out why you don't eat breakfast and what you might try to get around your own personal challenge:

Excuse #1-- "I don't have time". Well, this just isn't a good excuse anymore with all the breakfast bars there are out there. You can keep a box of nutrigrain bars, special K bars, 'go-tarts' (a slightly smaller, lower calorie version of pop-tarts), or any of the other dozen varieties of compact ready-to-eat bars that contain less than 170 calories in your car and not even have to take the time to remember to grab something in the morning. Here are your new directions: (1) unwrap, (2) eat on the way to work.

For those of you with a little bit of time in the morning, but not enough to cook or to sit and eat something that requires using a spoon or fork, here are two more options: For a hot breakfast, toast an english muffin or small bagel (the kind with 100-150 calories-- not 400 calories) while you're getting your briefcase and coat ready to go. On your way out the door, grab a slice of cheese (low fat mozzarella is my favorite) and place it on one piece of the toast. Put the other piece of toast on top of this and wrap in a paper towel. When you get in the car and pull away from your house, you are ready to open the paper towel and enjoy a warm, melted cheese breakfast sandwich!

For a cold breakfast, slice and freeze fruit ahead of time. Bananas, berries, and peaches all work great. Throw a cup full in a blender or a magic bullet, pour lowfat or skim milk in to cover the fruit, put on lid, and blend for about 20 seconds until you have a smoothie. Pour in a cup and take with you... how easy is that? And very low fat with calcium and vitamins to boot.

Excuse #2--"I don't like breakfast foods". Guess what? You do not have to eat breakfast foods at breakfast. You can have a turkey sandwich or a cold chicken leg or a leftover bowl of chili. It's really only our country and our culture that chooses what our typical breakfast is. If you visit other places you may see them eating fish and yogurt for breakfast! So grab whatever you like and enjoy having a meal in the morning. If you're trying to lose weight you should definitely keep the meal under 500 calories with less than 30% of the calories coming from fat. Otherwise, there are no restrictions on what you like to eat first thing in the morning, as long as you enjoy it!

Excuse #3--I'm not hungry in the morning". This is totally understandable. Your body isn't used to eating something at this hour and you feel like you have no appetite at all. Some people even get nauseated at the thought of eating first thing in the morning. You might try eating something an hour or so after you get up, like just when you get to work (if you can change your schedule to get there 15 minutes ahead of time it won't interfere with your job). Or you might do well to start with liquids and light foods. Try a small glass of juice and five or six saltines. Maybe some dry cereal. Or a Carnation Instant Breakfast Drink. Anything you can sip or munch on slowly, whether it's at home, on the way to work, or in the office. Let your body ease into the idea of a new meal at a new time.

Excuse #4--"Then I get hungry at 10:30". See paragraph two. Have a snack. Don't worry that you are eating more. Have a 200 calorie breakfast and a 100 calorie snack (a few graham cracker squares and a piece of fruit, or a 100 calorie snack bag). See if you don't notice that you are much less hungry at lunch and at dinner and that you end up eating less food later in the day.

Try these tips, and then let me know, "how's that working for you?"

Medifast For Teens Or Kids? My Modified Version That Has Worked

Let me disclose right upfront that I am not a doctor, but I have lost almost 50 pounds on medifast. A couple of months ago, I was approached by a coworker who had three pretty overweight children, who frankly were approaching being obese. After seeing my results, and noticing that I'd been able to eat snack type foods, my coworker wanted to know if medifast could work for her kids and her teenage daughter.

There's not much data available on using the medifast diet on kids or teens and I knew that children are still growing so it probably was not a good idea to severely limit or restrict their calories. But I also knew that some of this diet's foods are very carb and snack like, and I knew that she was having trouble controlling the snacks that her kids ate. In particular, the kids were very fond of junk foods and candy.

A light bulb went off in my head. I figured maybe we could start with just encouraging the kids to eat a medifast bar, pudding or shake when they reached for a junk food snack. In essence, we were trading the high sugar, high calorie candy bars and fast foods for something equivalent from the diet's offerings. Since these kids snacked several times per day, we were saving a lot of calories this way. Initially, we left their regular meals alone, just using medifast as snack substitutes. We ordered one variety package (and are getting ready to order another) and this lasted us a good while and was not much more expensive than junk food.

The kids handled this pretty well. Luckily, most of the medifast snack foods are really good, so it was not a big stretch to eat a protein bar rather than a candy bar or medifast pudding or crackers rather than chips. We always made sure we took the food out of the wrapper so they didn't have to walk around advertising they were eating diet foods.

The kids started to see some results after only a few weeks. As their enthusiasm increased even more, we decided to see if we could replace more of their daily empty calories with medifast. However, we were very careful not to restrict their calories or food choices. Basically, we added one medifast element at every meal and had them eat that in addition to and before their regular meal.

For instance for breakfast we would offer them medifast oatmeal or eggs to start. They would eat that and then if they were still hungry they could eat their regular sugary cereal breakfast if they wanted. For lunch, they'd have the diet's soup or chili before they dove into the pizza or burgers. (We'd pack this in a thermos so no one knew they were eating diet food.) And we started preparing lean and green meals for dinner. We still let them eat a bit of their regular favorite foods at dinner, but just not nearly as much.

What we hoped would happen did. The kids got filled up on medifast so they didn't eat as much of their junk and low quality foods and they continue to see really dramatic results. The teen is now able to self regulate what she eats and has cut out a lot of junk. We still don't allow them to rely solely on the diet for their calories. That may be too drastic for kids, but the teen in particular is now making really good choices with the food that she eats in addition to medifast.

I think the reason this worked is because the medifast snack foods are really tasty and kid friendly and we never restricted what the kids ate. We never told them they couldn't have anything. We just had them eat medifast first. We were adding food instead of taking it away, but by doing this, they were actually eating less bad foods because they were filling up on medifast.

I would never advocate replacing medifast for a kid or teen's entire caloric intake. However, in this case, substituting the diet's foods for junk food snacks or poor food choices has been quite effective and much easier than I thought. My coworker is very grateful and is now on medifast herself.

Losing Weight - Why is it so Hard?

Losing weight is considerably more effective when there is an effective way to lessen hunger, and once you can control or lessen the feeling of hunger losing fat is really very simple. The thing that most people neglect is proper nutrition, you need the right dietary program in order to make sure your body is still getting all the nutrients it needs to maintain itself and also to keep your metabolism going at 100 percent. It is important to remember that losing weight is not about starving yourself, and require consistency and commitment in order to see results.

Losing weight is one of those things that nearly everyone would like to do, and it can be very easy you just need to basically eat less and exercise more. It can also be hard because it involves commitment, and takes a lot of time and effort, and most people are just not willing to do these simple things in order to drop weight. Losing weight is really all about changing your current lifestyle, and creating a new healthier lifestyle that supports weight loss.

Losing weight is a long term commitment, especially if you have a large amount of weight to lose to get to your goal. It is important to note that losing weight is not a project with a simple completion date, it is a lifestyle change and really takes a lot of time to see results. If you take the short sighted approach you will be disappointed because most of the time the body will lose weight in burst, so one month you may see a large loss while other months you may see no loss at all. So keep you eye on the long term and you should be fine.

In closing I want to stress the fact that losing weight is not achieved by missing meals, following the latest diets, or relying on diet pills. It really comes down to hard work, dedication, and consistency. You actually have to do hard work in order to reach anything that is worth while in this life and weight loss is no different to that.

Weight Loss Program Diet Tips - Healthy Snacks That Satisfy

Healthy weight loss programs don't have to mean diet drudgery. Sure, you may have to give up certain foods, but for most of us it's about food and snack choices that allow us to still eat foods we enjoy the taste of, but that are lower in fat, sugar, and empty carbohydrates. Since many of us eat healthy meals but sabotage our diets by snacking on the wrong foods, learning to replace them with satisfying but healthy treats can put us back on course. These weight loss tips should help.

Here's some quick, tasty, and satisfying snacks that will bolster your weight loss program.

First, try a glass of juice-water. What the heck is juice water? Think of it as a weight loss supplement. It's an invention on mine to make sure I get enough water, which I have a hard time drinking by itself. Fill a glass 7 or 8 parts with water, and top off the rest with orange juice, lemonade, limeade, ruby red grapefruit, or whatever you prefer. It makes a tasty, filling, and often craving-crushing treat that's also very low in sugar.

Healthy Weight Loss Diet Tip: Never drink your juices straight up. Way too much sugar. Always dilute them as juice water. This habit alone will trim calories off your weight loss diet every day. It also stretches your grocery dollars if you use lemonade or limeade concentrates. They're far less costly than orange juice, and ounce for ounce their stronger taste does a more efficient job of flavoring your water.

If you definitely feel the need for something to satisfy the eating urge, try a tablespoon of peanut butter, which should be on almost everyone's weight loss diet program. It has just enough fat for flavor and just enough sweetness to satisfy. For it's size and caloric value, it's also filling. Want to juice it up? Dip-up a little of your favorite fruit preserve. It also makes a quick one-spoonful dessert.

Try chocolate Ovaltine and milk. It's chocolaty, it's delicious, and it includes vitamins and minerals. It's also far more filling than ice cream, which is in fact not filling at all. But use just one or two tablespoons of Ovaltine, not the recommended four. One or two is plenty, and it reduces your sugar consumption.

Another chocolate ice cream switcheroo is hot chocolate, but don't reach for the chemical-laden packaged mix. Instead, heat a cup of milk in the microwave for 1.5 to 2 minutes, then add one or two tablespoons of Ovaltine.

Just make sure you grab a few weight loss pills to go with it. Instead, have a piece of toast with jam. Whole grain bread has real protein, and far fewer carbs than pastry. If you toast it, you also improve the fiber benefit for your body. Add a thin layer of apple butter for extra satisfaction. (Apple butter has less sugar than other fruit jellies and preserves.)

Substitutes: honey on the bread instead of preserves, and half of an English muffin instead of a slice of whole grain bread.

Try to always keep around a bag of apples and oranges. Since you can't always get the fruit you want in season, keep some raisins in the pantry. Just a small scoop will satisfy almost any sweet tooth. But be sure to brush your teeth afterwards. Raisins are really good at sticking to your teeth, and you don't want the sugar hanging around there.

Other suggestions:

Sure, every now and again you need to let go and eat that big bowl of chocolate ice cream. When the time comes, savor it for all it's worth. But on a daily basis, if you'll make some sensible substitutions in the snacking department, you'll lower your daily calorie intake and put yourself on track for long-term healthy weight loss and proper diet management.

A common question that arises when you see a new product is weather is it scam? Or will it work? Or does it deliver what it must. The same question arises when you see turbulence training. There are many people who are getting good results from turbulence training I am one too.

How To Eliminate Belly Fat Starting Today

As we all know belly fat is really bad for you. It has been linked to conditions such as diabetes. It can also increase your odds of heart disease. So it is really important to get rid of this horrid fat as it will only reduce your quality of life over time. There is no time like the present so you need to get moving.

Exercise alone I am afraid to say will not get rid of visceral fat. With that said exercise is a key component in the war on fat. Another key component is diet and you want to avoid foods that will add to the problem such as foods that are high in saturated fat.

The key to success is to burn more energy than you ingest. As a result the combination of exercise and diet combined will prove to be the most effective. Like anything else in life variety is the spice that will improve your well being.

Eating the same stuff and doing the same exercises day and day out will not get the results you desire. As a consequence you need to mix things up and at the same time you need to somewhat enjoy what you are doing as this will help you maintain motivation.

As for supplements they definitely can help to get things underway but remember they should never substitute diet and exercise. If you want to keep eating pizza while watching TV popping pills then I think your smart enough to know that all you are doing is avoiding the issue and your health overall will not improve.

So use some common sense and apply the basics and soon enough you will have that flat tummy.

The Magic Weight Loss Button

Have you noticed how so many people are looking for "the magic weight loss" button? Something instant. Something magical. Something that produces MASSIVE change with NO time or effort. Whenever I go to the supermarket I always grab the National Inquirer and read it while I'm in line. It usually sparks some fun conversation with the cashier. I use to ridicule these type of magazines, but more recently I began reading (not buying) them with a watchful eye. Here's why: these magazines reflect human behavior in it's rawest most primitive form.

The truth is that these magazines are HUGE sellers. It costs TONS of money to advertise in these magazines and the only way any company is going to advertise in these magazines and CONTINUE to advertise in these magazines is if they're making lots of money. Makes sense right? Well, what kind of weight loss ads will you find in there? Magic button ads. That's what sells right? NO effort, no time, but BIG, life changing results. These are the magazines that the masses of people are buying. And by the way, I don't mean to sound condescending like I'm "too good" for these magazines. Truth is, I think they're kind of funny but I guess we all have a little bit of, shall we say..."curiosity" (nosiness) in us.

HERE'S THE POINT: Look at the bodies of the masses of people. The people who are buying these magazines and buying what's advertised in them. It fascinates me how people well into their 40's and 50's will still blindly purchases these products off of t.v that promise overnight results. Do you want to know what the REAL secret is? It's continued (forever) learning. It's applying that knowledge through action and continuing to change that action until you get a desired outcome.

This is when you begin to KNOW, with absolute certainty, exactly how to be in 100% control of the way your body looks and feels. Look, I'm not implying that losing weight is extremely hard and time consuming. Not at all. But there is no magic button. And if you believe there is (instead of truly educating yourself with the facts - that you KNOW work) then you'll be like the millions who simply continue to deny reality but get no results. It's like continuing to buy get rich quick schemes that promise overnight riches with no work.

Am I being harsh? Maybe.

Am I being honest, because I TRULY want you to breakthrough to the body you deserve?

Always.

Look at the show "the Biggest Loser" for example. Are you familiar with it? I really haven't seen too many episodes and quite frankly I think it's actually kind of boring (even though I think the stories are very inspiring.) But, take a look at these people. Are they making these dramatic changes by exercising 7 minutes a day three times a week?

I don't think so.

Here's the best part: once you know EXACTLY what needs to be done to live in your ultimate body, then you can make the journey as fun as enjoyable as possible. You can make the exercise as short as possible. You can make the food taste as good as possible. You can splurge and eat unhealthy as much as possible. Do you understand what I'm saying?

When you know (through personal education) exactly what needs to be done then you know exactly what you can get away with.

And then you're not stressed out in the least. It's like a big game and you already know that your going to win. After all, you know the rules. This is what living life lean is all about. And trust me, it's easier than might you think. And it's a ton of fun.

But you don't get here by pushing a button.

Weight Loss And Metabolism

There are things that you hear mentioned from time to time. They seem to be common words or phrases, you tie them to a particular subject, and you even think you understand what they mean. Sometimes, however, you don't really know what that word means and how it REALLY relates to the subject you have come to associate it with.

"Metabolism" is one of these words. In the checkout line at the supermarket, magazines have headlines like "This Food Can Boost Your Metabolism". Your doctor says, "Your metabolism has slowed down over the last few years". You even hear there's a new weight loss craze called "Ultrametabolism".

From these, and a few hundred other situations, you have figured out that metabolism has something to do with weight loss, and maybe weight gain, but do you really know what the relationship is, how one affects the other, and what you can do about it? Those are three questions we will try to answer, briefly, but with enough information for you to use what you have learned to improve your weight loss program.

WHAT IS METABOLISM?

Metabolism as word or process can be defined in two simple statements. First, it is the chemical process within your body for the maintenance of life, yielding energy and forming substances necessary to life, such as blood, bone, muscle, fat, and so on. Second, it is the processing of specific substances, such as fat metabolism, iodine metabolism, and many others. While both of these relate to what we are talking about, the first statement is the important one for you at the moment. YOUR METABOLISM is how YOUR BODY goes about extracting energy from food, building and repairing tissue and organs, and how efficiently it does this. That last part about efficiency is a key point in weight loss and weight gain.

HOW IS METABOLISM RELATED TO WEIGHT LOSS...AND WEIGHT GAIN?

At various times in your life, your metabolism worked in different ways. Many of you can remember the days when you could eat anything you wanted and never gain a pound...a large pizza, three sodas with sugar, and some cinnamon sticks, and absolutely no change!

In the younger years of your life, your metabolism is in the high gears, probably the highest gears it will ever be in. For most of you in these years, weight gain and weight loss are not really issues. Some people, however, do have slower metabolic rates, and may have genetic tendencies or clinical conditions which cause them to have more of a weight gain than others of their age group. No matter which group you find yourself in, changing your metabolic rate, revving up your metabolism, will increase the speed and efficiency with which your body turns food into energy and body "parts and pieces".

Unfortunately, as you have long suspected, as you aged, your metabolism slowed down. Part of this is just something the body does with age, part of it, while somewhat related to age, is the effect of changes which take place in your way of life as you age. Fortunately, both are somewhat reversible, essentially through the same process. More on this in the last section. The part where your body just slows down has to do with "resting metabolism", and the other part...well, let's just call that "rusting metabolism".

RESTING METABOLISM

When you are doing something that doesn't seem to demand energy, your body still needs to do some housekeeping activities. Your diaphragm expands and contracts and your heart pumps blood for example. Tissues are repaired and waste products are carried off. While you're sitting there in a semi-vegetative state watching reruns, your body is hard at work.

As you age, this resting metabolic rate decreases. At least one estimate puts the decrease at approximately 10% between childhood and retirement, and another 10% after that. Odds are that you still like the pizza, and soda, and cinnamon sticks, but your body doesn't change as much into energy as it used to. Your internal maintenance doesn't get done as efficiently as it used to either, so there tends to be some more "stuff" left over after the meal that disappeared into thin air when you were a teenager. This decrease happens to just about everybody, so if you didn't have a weight problem in high school, you may see fat accumulating on your body as you age. If you DID have a weight problem in your younger years, it will probably just get worse.

RUSTING METABOLISM

In addition to the natural changes that come with age, you have made some changes in your lifestyle as you aged as well. In my younger years, I rode a bicycle to and from school, two miles each way, five days a week. For some of that time, I had a paper route and rode my bicycle over a two mile stretch every day, pedaling a bike with a heavy load of papers for about a mile to get to the route, and throwing papers right and left (and, yes, I did get my papers on the porch). For fun on the weekends and during the summer, you guessed it, I rode my bike all over Pensacola, Florida. As an adult, I would walk out to my car, drive to work, walk to my desk, walk back to the car and drive home.

Activity, such as my bicycle riding needs energy, and revs up the metabolic rate, that is, the speed with which the energy is formed...and used up. This burns calories, and those calories that are burned in the process cannot hang around to become fat, which just...well, you know, hangs around.

UNDERSTANDING AND USING YOUR METABOLISM AS PART OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM

Having learned about resting and rusting metabolism, it might seem that one quick answer is to simply eat less. To tell the truth, for small, short term weight loss, just knocking a few calories out of the diet might be sufficient. However, those lost pounds will eventually find their way home, and possibly bring some friends with them, and dieting has additional pitfalls that can't be covered here. One pitfall you DO need to know about is that if your diet takes your calorie intake below a certain point for a while, your body will adjust its metabolic rate to a new, permanent, lower level, and will not only maintain your weight on fewer calories, but may actually begin increasing your weight again. If you go off that calorie-restricted diet, your body will keep on chugging along on fewer calories and your weight will go back up, possibly even higher than it was before. Since your metabolism is now at a lower rate, it will be even harder to lose weight the next time.

TIP: Although a diet might not be the answer, if you are a typical human of the 21st century, you are probably consuming some things you could do without or in quantities in excess of what you need. Sugar, for example. Or let's look at that ice cream box. The last one I saw said there were 16 servings in there. A few years ago, one of those boxes lasted through four servings for me. Take a look around, there ARE some changes you can make.

Increased activity (okay, I'll say the bad word..."exercise") can take care of the rusting metabolism rate. I walked 45 minutes on my walker yesterday and burned over 250 calories. Although many factors such as nutritional supplements can have small effects on resting metabolism, the two major factors are age and activity. You and I probably agree that we cannot do a d***** thing about age. What we do have control over is activity. Increasing your exercise or activity level has two basic effects in terms of metabolism. Exercise burns calories and raises the resting metabolic rate.

EXERCISE BURNS CALORIES

When you use your remote control to change channels on the TV, you barely change your resting rate. If you stand up and walk across the room to change the channel and walk back to your chair, you have just....oh my God!...exercised. Not only that, you have burned a few more calories simply by getting up off your...Sorry, I meant...out of the chair. Go for a walk, swim, garden, ride a bike, take the dog for a walk. If exercising in public embarrasses you, blame it on the dog! "Yeah, the vet said he needed to get out more. HE'S putting on a few pounds." Go ahead, try it. Nobody will think you're walking yourself...right? Whatever it is, do it every day or at least several times a week, and you will burn off some of those extra calories and pounds of fat.

EXERCISE RAISES YOUR RESTING METABOLIC RATE

There are some exercise activities, usually of an aerobic nature, that, when done over time. tend to shift the body to a higher metabolic rate. If you go out for a long walk today, you will burn some extra calories while walking. Take that long walk every day for several weeks, and your resting metabolic rate will actually go up, and you will burn more calories when you are in front of the TV. Not only that, your metabolic rate will remain increased for a while after you finish your exercise activity, so instead of simply burning excess calories during the exercise, you will continue to burn excess calories over a short period following it.

Other exercise activities, such as resistance activities, build lean muscle mass. Muscle tissue burns more calories than other types of tissue, such as fat tissue, so building lean muscle mass not only burns calories during the exercise, but the lean muscle mass you add to your body will continue to burn calories, helping to increase your resting metabolic rate.

TIP: Daily activity will burn excess calories and increase your metabolism. Changing some of your eating habits, such as cutting out unnecessary fats and carbs (yes, some fats are necessary) and watching portion sizes, will cut down excess calories that your body has to deal with. This double barreled approach will give you the most effective permanent weight loss experience.

How To Lose Weight Fast Exercise Tips

Here are some tips for you:

=> Follow a solid plan - One of the best things you can do when trying to lose weight, in my opinion, is to have a solid plan that you can simply follow from step 1 to the end, this makes it a lot easier than just trying to do what you think is the right thing to do, when you have a plan to follow, it becomes as simple as just doing the steps it tells you to do, you can get a solid plan online.

=> Have a target - Saying you want to lose weight is one thing, saying you want to lose x amount of weight in x amount of time is another, when you have a specific target that you want to reach, it becomes much more clear what you need to do and how you are going to achieve it, so make sure you know what you want as an end result and then do what it takes to get there.

=> Be disciplined - It can be very easy to become lazy or to not do the things you need to do because you don't feel like doing them, however, if this happens then you can be pretty sure that you won't reach your goal, what you need to do is keep yourself disciplined and make sure you do what you need to do everyday, if you can do this then you are much more likely to succeed.
